If you run a small business, a home business or a huge company, there are phrases you or your employees may be using in the company’s email messages that are getting caught in spam filters.

According to the Boulder, Colorado-based Institute of Social Internet Public Policy (ISIPP), real spam has recently decreased significantly but many ISPs and spam filters are grabbing legitimate messages because of their subject lines.

Don’t let this be your business (or personal) emails.

Here are the 10 phrases the ISIPP says you will want to avoid:

  • “Additional income”
  • “All natural”
  • “Apply online”
  • “Avoid bankruptcy”
  • “Congratulations”
  • “Consolidate debt and credit”
  • “Dear friend”
  • “Don’t delete”
  • “Home employment”

While avoiding these phrases still doesn’t guarantee delivery of your messages, it will help keep your messages from being automatically screened out. There are several other content messages you also will want to avoid including:

  • Obvious misspellings such as “loan$”
  • Prescription drugs by name
  • Sexually explicit material
  • “Falsified header information” that spammers are known to do
  • Claims the recipient is a “winner” of something

A comprehensive list of phrases you will want to avoid can be found in the ISIPP’s Email Deliverability Handbook, available through ISIPP’s SuretyMail Email Accreditation Program.
